A More Reliable Energy Grid

"[Sunrise Powerlink] solves San Diego's known import reliability problem for 2010..."

–California Independent System Operator, CSRTP-2006 Report

San Diego's growth over the last few years has been remarkable. But as the region continues to expand, little energy infrastructure has been built to keep up with the increasing demand for electricity. The last new transmission line like the Sunrise Powerlink was constructed in 1983. Since that time the population has grown 60% and the demand for energy has more than doubled. In fact, forecasts show that by 2010 the region will demand more power than can be produced locally or imported over existing transmission lines. And that puts us all at risk.

Because of San Diego's location in the southernmost part of the state, it sits in an energy "cul-de-sac," served by only two power lines that are already overburdened. It is imperative that we improve and expand the existing energy grid so that California businesses and families can have safe and reliable power for years to come.

San Diego is an integral part of the entire Southern California energy grid. Improving reliability in San Diego will reduce the chance of rolling blackouts - and result in more reliable electric service - for Los Angeles and other areas of Southern California.
